THOMASVILLE — Early voting has been “robust,” Thomas County Elections Supervisor Frank Scoggins said.

Early voting ends Friday, and Election Day for several races is Tuesday. Early voting is being held at the Thomas County Judicial Complex.

“It seems to be a record number of voters and turnout,” Scoggins said. “We’ve exceeded the 7,000 mark already.”

By contrast, there were fewer than 3,900 ballots cast in the May general primary for governor, for a turnout of 14 percent among 26,771 registered voters.

Scoggins said there have been lines but the wait times to early vote have been from 25-30 minutes at the most.

“I think we’ve handled it well,” he said.

The wait times could be a result of voters reading the five state constitutional amendments on the ballot. Scoggins said his office has provided data about the amendments around the community to help people understand the amendments before them.

Wednesday was the slowest day for early voting, with about 500 people casting ballots, Scoggins said. Most days average around 700 early voters.

Scoggins said his office also has been inundated with requests for absentee ballots. His staff has hand-delivered absentee ballots to hospitalized voters.

There are approximately 30,000 registered voters, and the county has 20 voting precincts that will be open Tuesday.

“We’re ready for Tuesday,” Scoggins said.
