Dalton dazzled a home crowd filled with Homecoming visitors Friday night, taking down Sprayberry in a back-and-forth region matchup 21-13.
The Catamounts (5-3, 3-3 in Region 6-6A) trailed at the end of the first quarter 3-0. They took the lead midway through the second period on a 3-yard run from junior Jahmyr Gibbs, but Sprayberry responded with another field goal for a 7-6 Dalton lead going into halftime.
“A win is a win, and you take it anyway you can,” Dalton coach Matt Land said.
Sprayberry scored its first touchdown midway through the third quarter after Dalton fumbled the ball inside the 20-yard line. Dalton answered back to take the lead again 14-13. Bryce Houghton caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Landon Allen.
“Bryce was the one who called that play, and he ran it perfectly,” Land said.
Gibbs added his second score of the night from 14 yards out to seal the win for Dalton in the fourth quarter.
“We wanted that, but it was still a one-score game,” Land said. “We never thought we had a breath of air, but I think it was a good thing. When you take your foot off the gas, sometimes they can let up, but our guys never gave up. Our defense played outstanding.”
Dalton had two fumble recoveries itself on defense from Leo Garcia and Tyson Swope.
Gibbs ended with 19 carries and 77 yards, while Jeric Montgomery added eight rushes for 67 yards.
The win puts Dalton back at even in the region.
“From this point forward, we have to keep going every day,” Land said. “We are not allowing ourselves any errors. We have to win out, and we might even need some help after that. We don’t have a chance if we lose one along the way.”
Dalton is off next Friday night.
