Colquitt, Camden to play football in one week’s time

MOULTRIE – With all the mess made by Michael getting cleaned up around the city and residents still waiting for power and other services to return to working order, the matter of a high school football schedule is all settled.
Colquittcountypackerfootball.com is showing how – with the Tuesday postponement of the Packers’ first Region 1-7A game that was set for today (Oct. 12) – the remainder of the 2018 regular season will proceed. Camden County High was going to play on Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Instead, the Wildcats will ride over from Kingsland in one week – Oct. 19 – to take on 7-0 and No. 1-ranked Colquitt County.
This means a bit of a push down effect for the other two region contests. The game between Colquitt County and Tift County at Brodie Field in Tifton moves from Oct. 19 to Oct. 26.
The Packers wrap things up against the Lowndes High Vikings at home on Nov. 2, not Oct. 26. Nov. 2 was originally a bye week, the second one for Colquitt, but Michael’s arrival meant the Packers’ bye weeks for 2018 became back-to-back. The state football opening round is the weekend of Nov. 9.
All practices for Colquitt County athletes during the remainder of the week were called off after late Tuesday afternoon. Not only is the softball team’s first-round GHSA playoff series going to begin Monday, so will any and all practices resume.
According to the Valdosta Daily Times, Lowndes and Tift County will also not play football tonight. Instead, that game is Oct. 19 in Valdosta. Lowndes will then host Camden on Oct. 26, one week later than originally planned.
Camden County’s football club under head coach Bob Sphire began the season 6-1. Two years ago, the Wildcats only played nine football games when one was called off due to an approaching hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean. Last year, Camden’s non-region rivalry game with Glynn Academy was moved from early September to the October bye weekend in between region games due to Irma.
While Moultrie has seen its share of tropical systems pass through the last three years, like Irma last year, only one other alteration to the football schedule occurred. In 2016, the Packers faced Tucker High on a Saturday afternoon instead of a Friday night in September. Credit for that goes to Hermine.
