MOULTRIE – The resurgent Camden County football team will bring a 6-1 record and a five-game winning streak to Moultrie on Friday for the start of the Region 1-7A schedule.
While 7-0 Colquitt County, the No. 1 team in Class 7A, was basking in a much-needed and well-deserved off-week, Camden was at Chris Gilman Stadium putting a 52-7 whipping on Colleton High, which was visiting from Walterboro, S.C.
The Wildcats’ six wins are more than the last two Camden County teams combined for. They were 2-7 in 2016 and 3-7 last year.
Clearly Bob Sphire, the longtime North Gwinnett coach, has the Kingsland football fans energized again in just his second season.
Camden honored itS 2008 and 2003 state championship teams on Friday and it is not inconceivable that the Wildcats will soon be back among the contenders in Class 7A, perhaps even this year.
The Wildcats jumped out early against Colleton, getting a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Logan Watson to end the first series.
Watson found Logan Berryhill for a touchdown on the Wildcats’ next possession and Camden added a field goal early in the second quarter to go up 17-0.
It was 38-7 at the half after Daryl Williams and Jamie Felix scored on runs and Watson hit Berryhill for his third touchdown pass of the first two quarters.
Camden added two more scores in the second half.
The Wildcats won their season-opener by a touchdown 27-10 over West Forsyth, before falling to the other South Carolina team on its schedule, Wren (S.C.), by a 25-14 margin.
The other four of the five straight wins have come over Locust Grove, 51-13; Richmond Hill, 33-6; Brunswick, 37-0; and Glynn Academy, 20-9.
The Packers took down Spires’s first Camden County team 27-6 last year, but it was not his first time of going head-to-head with the Packers’ Rush Propst.
When he was at North Gwinnett, he was 1-2 against Propst-coached Packer teams.
In 2011, Colquitt won in the second round of the playoffs at North Gwinnett 17-7.
The next year, the two teams met in the Corky Kell Classic and North Gwinnett won on a late field goal 16-14.
Three years later, the Packers won 45-14 over North Gwinnett, again in the Corky Kell.
Tift County also prepped for its region opener at Lowndes next week by shutting out Miller Grove 45-0 at Brodie Field’s Homecoming game.
The win over the now 1-5 Wolverines jumps the Blue Devils record to 5-2. Tift has lost only to Warner Robins 40-29 in the season-opener and to Parkview 31-28 on Sept. 14.
The Blue Devils, who were up 28-0 at the half, got a big game from senior quarterback Patrick Felton who completed 9-for-15 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.
He also carried four times for 143 yards.
Running back Mike Jones had 14 carries for 143 yards.
PACKERS NOTES: Remember Trinity Catholic that came from St. Louis to Moultrie on Aug. 25 only to lose to the Packers 42-14? Well, the Titans lost the next week too to fall to 0-2.
But since then, Trinity Catholic has reeled off five wins in a row, averaging 59.8 points a game.
Last Friday, the Titans won 61-6 over Career Academy.
Also on Friday, McEachern lost for the first time since falling to the Packers in the Corky Kell Classic back on Aug. 18. The Indians were handled by undefeated Hillgrove 31-21.
McEachern will be home to face Marietta next Friday.
Other Colquitt County opponents and how they fared last week are:
• Grayson, which defeated Shiloh 59-3. The Rams will be home to face 5-1 Archer next Friday.
• Valdosta, which rolled over Houston County 55-14.
The 4-3 Wildcats will be home to play Coffee next Friday.
• Alcovy, which came back from its 56-0 loss to Colquitt County to lose 18-0 to Grovetown.
• Thomasville, which lost a Region 1-AA game to Brooks County 27-11. The Bulldogs fall to 5-2 as they prepare to play host to Fitzgerald next Friday.
• Warner Robins, which crushed Harris County 41-0. The Demons, whose only loss was at home against Colquitt County, will travel to Thomas County Central on Friday.
