THOMASVILLE, Ga. — The Brookwood Warriors couldn’t quite reel in the Southland Raiders on Friday night.
Brookwood spotted Southland a 20-point lead and had two possessions to tie or take the lead in the fourth quarter, but fell 30-20 at Warrior Field on Friday night.
The loss dropped Brookwood to 4-3 on the year and 0-1 in the region.
“The slow start killed us,” Warriors coach Shane Boggs said. “We really didn’t play well on offense in the first half and we still had a shot. We had two possessions in the fourth and we didn’t get it done.”
Southland opened the scoring with a field goal and the Warriors blocked an extra point on the Raiders’ last touchdown of the first half.
“We really struggled the whole first half,” Boggs said. “We had a hard time running the ball with any consistency. We had a hard time throwing it and catching it. As poorly as we played, I thought we had a shot.”
Down 23-0 early in the third, Bridger Middleton’s 8-yard run capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive.
Joe Parker hit Vincent Yokley with a touchdown pass on the second play of the fourth quarter to cut it to 23-13. Parker connected with Kurtis Brown on a 40-yard strike to make it 23-20.
But after a second chance to tie or take the lead, the Raiders picked off a pass and ran it back for a touchdown to put the game out of reach.
“The biggest thing is I was pleased with how the kids fought in the third and fourth quarters,” Boggs said. “We let them off the hook a little bit.”
Brookwood travels to Deerfield-Windsor on Oct. 12.
