NEWNAN, Ga. — The Heritage Hawks scored the go-ahead touchdown with less than a minute left and then blocked a potential game-winning field goal on the final play to upend Brookwood 21-20 Friday night.
The Warriors led 20-7 midway through the fourth before the Hawks came back.
“We had our chances,” said Warriors coach Shane Boggs. “We played a pretty good game to build that lead.”
After a series of Bridger Middleton runs, the Warriors got on the board first with Joe Parker’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Kurtis Brown. But the Warriors missed the extra point, leaving them with a 6-0 lead.
Middleton scored on a 20-yard run, and Jonathan Burns added the point after for a 13-0 lead. After Heritage scored to make it 13-7, Jarcariaous Lewis picked off a Hawks pass and ran it back for a touchdown.
Brookwood also missed a field goal in the third quarter that would have extended the lead to 23-7.
“We couldn’t make the plays to create a little space in the third quarter,” Boggs said.
The loss dropped the Warriors to 4-2 on the season.
“Our kids fought. Our kids fought for 48 minutes,” Boggs said after the loss. “We played a really good team. We left some plays out there. We have to learn to put people away when we have the opportunity and we had a had a lot of opportunities.”
