Charity motorcycle ride to support foster kids

TIFTON, Ga. — Area motorcyclists are invited to attend the first “Bikers for Backpacks” charity ride scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29, at Tifton Harley-Davidson.

Bikers for Backpacks will benefit local foster children all over South Georgia by providing them with a brand new backpack when they are placed in foster care. Backpacks then become “Journey Bags” that are filled with toiletries, blankets and stuffed animals. Journey Bags become the property of each foster child and can later be used as a carrying bag, overnight bag, or a backpack.

Backpacks are sold by Initial Outfitters, a faith-based company based in Auburn, Ala., according to a press release from organizers of the charity ride. Profits from the sale of the backpacks go to Christian feeding and education programs in the United States and around the world.

All backpacks that are purchased will be donated to a Tifton-based non-profit, Called to Care. Called to Care works with the Department of Family and Children’s Services to help provide for the physical needs of foster children. When a child comes into care, Called to Care provides a Journey Bag for each and every foster child in 11 of the 20 South Georgia counties they serve.

Registration starts at 9 a.m., and kickstands go up at 10:30. For more information, find them on Facebook under “Bikers for Backpacks.”
