Sound system music isn’t needed anyway

As a lifelong musician, I have learned a good way to be involved in an argument is to discuss music styles and preferences, especially with people who casually listen to music. Recent statements with regard to this fact have been seen in the Rant and Rave column.

These declarations have decried the music being presented over the sound system at the football games. As can be seen, there is great disagreement on what kind of music and the purpose of the music. One of those purposes stated was the need to “pump up the players.” My observation is the players spend time trying to pump up the fans.

Personally, I would rather there not be any music over the sound system. I go to watch the game, not be forced to have every moment filled with some kind of noise or “get ready to rumble.” The lady down the row constantly cheering “Go, Pack, Go” and rattling her can of rocks is more preferable.

The only music I believe to be most appropriate should come from our 50th Regiment Band, which has a fantastic sound and works hard each game to “pump up” the players and fans. I only wish I could hear them from the other end of the stadium where I sit. Perhaps a solution to this problem is to build suitable seating at the north end of the field for the band and it could be heard all over the stadium. I have observed college bands are seated at the end zones in their stadiums.

Supporting our band, cheerleaders, and football team is the most important part of these games. The music over the sound system is not needed.
