British leader presses unpopular trade plan

Brexit must satisfy the majority of the people in the UK or the country divided will be in trouble for years to come.

The UK is leaving the EU. This is now written in stone as parliament has already approved the process. All the arguments are about how to leave the EU; with an agreement or without an agreement and if we leave with an agreement, what kind of an agreement?

In my country, all of these questions have been debated for the last 40 years. It has always been a divisive issue and it is not new.

While we are discussing the ins and outs of every detail of leaving Europe, we are now finding out that no one has asked Europe if a Canadian style trade agreement be acceptable to them! Instead Theresa May has gone ahead with an agreement (Chequers agreement) which was put together by her very close advisors without discussing it even with her own Minister(s) in advance. In a nutshell, she is proposing a free trade agreement and accepting to obey all the previous and future decisions will be taken by Europe regarding trade. She accepts the superiority of the European Court (with 27 foreign judges deciding) over the British courts. Many now consider this deal as divisive and it would leave the UK in limbo.

The Prime Minister’s Chequers deal will not satisfy people like me who voted for Brexit. If this deal is to go ahead and is accepted by the EU, the political class and the population will be discussing to leave the EU for another 40 years and that would jeopardize the future outlook of the UK.

A Canadian style trade agreement with the EU will satisfy most of the people who voted to leave or remain in the EU. A Canadian style trade agreement with the EU will secure a nearly Nil tariff on the goods and it will eliminate all the border checks necessary in Northern Ireland or in any other parts of the country while gaining all the freedoms we have asked for to become a sovereign nation again.

The European Union wants two things from us; an agreement so they can continue to sell into the UK without tariffs (800 thousand Mercedes cars were sold in the UK in 2016) and most importantly they want the UK to pay the EU approximately $50 billion for the privilege of making this agreement. We have already agreed to pay for the agreement.

She has a choice to go ahead and ignore all around her and promote the Chequers deal with one foot in Europe that will only satisfy the Prime Minister and her allies or she agrees to sign a Canadian style trade agreement that will satisfy most people and unite the country.

We will soon see if she can move us in the right direction like she has impressed everyone with her dancing moves.
