MACON, Ga. — Friday night was huge for the GMC Prep football program for a couple of reasons.

First, the Bulldogs earned a massive 63-0 victory over ACE (Academy for Classical Education) Charter School in Macon, but the win also meant something more as this is the first time GMC Prep has started a varsity football season at 3-0 in six years.

“It feels great,” head coach Steven Simpson said after the game. “Our guys are extremely excited about it because it was a goal for them. But we consider the first three games the preseason. Now we’re getting into the regular season. They’re excited about 3-0 and they’re excited to come back to work on Monday and get ready for a region ballgame.”

Friday’s meeting with the Gryphons was never really a contest as the Bulldogs carried a 42-0 advantage into halftime that was due in large part to the play of senior Malik Foston. The wingback scored three touchdowns for more than 150 yards combined and also added a punt return for a touchdown for good measure. That special teams score measured about 75 yards according to Simpson.

GMC Prep sent out its younger unit in the second half and they represented as well, following Devin Stephens’ kickoff return for a touchdown to open the third quarter. Freshmen Trey Woods and Chaze Goddard each notched 70-plus-yard touchdown runs of their own to supplement the Bulldogs’ scoring in the closing half.

“I’m really happy with how they played,” Simpson said of his team. “We challenged them a little bit before the game to not let up if they get a lead, and they didn’t. We sort of let up in the first two games, but we kept our foot on the gas tonight.”

Simpson and the Bulldogs reenter region play for the first time in three years next week when they make the short trip to Sparta to face Hancock Central.
