MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Colquitt County man arrested in 2016 in the fatal beating of his roommate entered a guilty plea on this week and will be sentenced in October.

Miguel Angel Medina pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Ramiro “Oscar” Hernandez. That plea was allowed as a reduction of a felony murder count in Medina’s indictment.

A Colquitt County Superior Court judge requested a pre-sentencing investigation be completed before sentencing scheduled for Oct. 1.

Medina was arrested on May 7, 2016, after officers were called to the 699 Sardis Church Road address where he resided with Hernandez.

Deputies were dispatched to investigate a report of a fight. While they were there a neighbor told them that they had seen someone punching Hernandez and kicking him in the head.

At that time Hernandez, 31, refused medical treatment for his injuries, police said. Medina was charged with use of fighting words and was released from jail the same day.

Two days later deputies were again dispatched to the men’s residence at about 6:30 p.m. after neighbors found Hernandez’s body.

Autopsy results indicated that Hernandez died of blunt trauma to the head.

Neighbors reported seeing him alive as late as the afternoon of May 8.

Medina also was indicted on five family violence charges — three counts of aggravated assault and two counts of aggravated battery. Those charges will be dismissed as part of the plea arrangement.

In other court this week:

• Michael Jordan Coats and Jeffery Tyler Pifer each pleaded guilty to charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

They were sentenced to three five-year sentences, to be served consecutively for a total of 15 years in prison, and a $1,500 fine.

A charge of possession of a controlled substance against Pifer was dismissed.

• Vance Ervin Cuff pleaded guilty to possession of more than an ounce of marijuana and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and was sentenced to consecutive five-year sentences to serve in prison and a $3,000 fine.

Charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and another count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony were dismissed as part of the plea arrangement.
