MOULTRIE, Ga. — Colquitt County Regional Medical Center offers a Birth and Beyond support group for mothers who breastfeed their children.
The group meets once a month. The September meeting will be 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the Colquitt Regional Educational Services Building.
Ashley Lane, a nurse at Colquitt Regional Medical Center, works with every group member. She thinks the support group is important to have for women who are breastfeeding or are thinking about doing it.
“It’s a chance for them to come and be with other mothers that are having the same issues or if they need someone to vent to, we are here,” said Lane. “It also gives them a chance to ask questions. We provide snacks and drinks. We want them to feel like this is a safe haven for them and it is.”
The Birth and Beyond group is one of the many programs that Colquitt County Regional offers for expectant and new mothers. They offer pre- and post-birth counseling and one-on-one time to talk with someone if you prefer to be private.
According to kidshealth.org, breastfeeding benefits a child more than drinking regular formula or milk.
Alana Anderson, director of Colquitt Regional’s maternal services, firmly believes in everything that this program offers for the mothers of Colquitt County.
“Breastfeeding is considered the gold standard when it comes to feeding our kids at a young age,” Anderson said. “We want the best options for our children, and we will continue to support this because we feel this is the best option.”
