MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Lowndes County man arrested on Aug. 10 in Moultrie had more than two ounces of methamphetamine that he tossed from his car along with a handgun, according to police.

Officers stopped a Saturn driven by Robert Simpson when a Moultrie Police Department officer blocked his path on Veterans Parkway North near Rowland Drive.

Simpson, who was being sought by federal authorities and the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, was seen driving in Moultrie at about 10:30 a.m. and was hemmed in a short time later.

“Robert Simpson, a wanted fugitive, threw out methamphetamine and a gun,” DET Sgt. Justin Searcy said. “After stopping the vehicle on Veterans Parkway (we) also located what he threw out and a bag of meth of 57 grams combined total weight.”

In addition to the suspected methamphetamine, police also seized a .22-caliber handgun, Searcy said.

Simpson, 24, 4095 Great North Road, Valdosta, was charged with trafficking methamphetamine, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and commission of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Simpson also is a subject in a federal gang investigation, police said.

Simpson was still being held at Colquitt County Jail on Tuesday.
