LIVE OAK, Fla. — The Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office has turned an investigation into an incident at Suwannee Middle School last week over to the State Attorney’s Office.
According to Sheriff Sam St. John, two students reported seeing another student with a razor blade in the pickup area following school Aug. 14.

When the school’s guidance counselor approached the student, she tried to conceal the blade, which was from a pencil sharpener, St. John said.
After the counselor was able to get the blade, which was hidden in a green mask, away from the student, School Resource Officer Jacob Williamson was notified.
“Two students reported it because they were concerned,” St. John said. “They did the right thing by reporting it because they thought there could be some issues or problems.”
St. John said that Florida Statutes clearly state that a razor blade is one of the weapons prohibited on school property. The sheriff’s office turned the case over to the State Attorney on Monday to determine if charges should be filed.
But St. John added that he also sent a recommendation along with the case.
“I don’t want the girl, at her age, to have a record,” St. John said. “Even though what she had meets the criteria for a weapon on school property and ultimately the decision is up to the state attorney, as Sheriff my recommendation is not to charge her, or if they decide to charge her, consider a pretrial intervention and if she completes all of the stipulations that charges will be dropped.

“I’d prefer to let the school handle the discipline due to the nature of the incident and the age of the child.”
Ted Roush, the Superintendent of Schools, said he could not disclose any information regarding the school’s investigation due to privacy laws.
But he did confirm that there was incident that was being investigated.
“There is a matter of under investigation, however the issue is not a pencil sharpener,” Roush said. “What is being presented (on social media) is not the entire story.”
