MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Moultrie-Colquitt County Democratic Committee will hold a “Listen-Up session” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at the Colquitt County Arts Center.
Everybody is welcome to attend. The session is used as a tool to get voters to the polls and to recruit volunteers for the upcoming election in November.
The Listen-Up session will feature a special guest speaker that will speak on the importance of voting, news about the Democratic Party and more.
Alma Fleming has been in charge of the Moultrie-Colquitt County Democratic Committee for years now, and because of her diligence was awarded a trip to the White House in 2012 to meet then-President Barack Obama.
But now she is focused on getting the community behind Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams for the Georgia governor race.
“We want to make Georgia blue again but, we also want everybody to get out and vote,” said Fleming. “We want to get the Moultrie-Colquitt area fired up about the campaign of Stacey Abrams.”
Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp will face off to see who will become the next governor of Georgia.
Georgia has been led by a Republican since 1996, so Fleming knows the task won’t be easy. She said this race holds implications in the long run.
“We were able to get the community fired up for Obama,” Fleming said, “and we are trying to do the same for Abrams. We have about 5,300 registered Democrats here in Moultrie and they all showed up before. Now we just need them to do it again.”
The Listen-Up session is the start of many events the Democratic Committee plans during election season.
The general election will be held Nov. 6, with advance voting starting on Oct. 15. The last day to register to vote in the election will be Oct. 9.
