MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Colquitt County man who was fuzzy about how he ended up in the ditch early Sunday morning was not injured in the accident but was jailed on a drunk-driving charge.

A deputy on patrol at 4:26 a.m. saw a GMC Envoy in the east ditch in the 6000 block of Tallokas Road near its intersection with Cook Road.

When the officer went to the car to investigate he found that it was still in gear and the driver “sleeping heavily” inside and several attempts to wake him did not work.

After placing the car in park and removing the keys, the deputy was able to wake the driver after “multiple attempts using an loud voice and having to physically shake” the driver, who appeared disoriented upon gaining consciousness.

The driver, identified as Manuel Ernesto De Jesus Perez, initially attempted to grab the wheel and gear shift in an apparent attempt to drive away, police said. He was not sure where he was and asked the officer more than once why he had been pulled over.

Perez smelled of alcohol, police said, registered more than double the legal limit for driving on a portable alcohol sensor and was unable to perform field sobriety tests successfully, the officer reported.

Perez, 29, 180 Trailer Park Road, was charged with driving under the influence, open container in vehicle and failure to drive within single lane.
