MOULTRIE – Two future Colquitt County opponents met on Friday in a venue the Packers haven’t played in in seven years and both showed they might be capable of being a handful later this season.
Class 6A state runner-up Warner Robins got a big night from quarterback Dylan Fromm and dealt Tift County a 40-29 defeat in the two teams’ season-openers at McConnell-Talbert Stadium. Fromm completed 22-of-47 passes for 439 yards and three touchdowns in a game in which Tift County starting quarterback Patrick Felton suffered a second-quarter leg injury and did not return.
The Blue Devils got a 96-yard touchdown run from Mike Jones, a 52-yard field goal by Rosendo Ramirez and forced four turnovers. And Tift held Warner Robins to just 45 yards on the ground to help keep the game close. But it was not enough against Fromm and Co. Warner Robins receiver Marcayll Jones caught seven passes for 154 yards. Weston Clamp and Mac Turner played quarterback for the Blue Devils after Felton went down. The trio combined to complete 12-of-32 passes. Colquitt County will not see Tift County until Oct. 19 when the Packers travel to Brodie Field. The Packers’ meeting with Warner Robins will come on Sept. 14 at McConnell-Talbert. It will be Colquitt County’s first trip to the home of the Demons since losing 16-8 to Warner Robins there in 2011. Tift County will play host to Valdosta on Friday. Warner Robins will go to Locust Grove.
CAMDEN COUNTY 27, WEST FORSYTH 20 Camden won just five of 19 games over the past two seasons, but got off on the right foot in a lightning delayed game Friday at Chris Gilman Stadium, knocking off West Forsyth. The Wildcats capped their season-opening drive with a touchdown pass from Logan Watson to Shawn Hardy and scored again moments later after recovering a fumble on the West Forsyth 2. The Wolverines rallied to tie the game at 20-20 before the Wildcats won it on a 17-yard pass from Watson to Detravious Campbell. Camden County will travel to Macon next Friday to meet South Carolina’s Wren High School at Mercer University. West Forsyth will be off until Friday, Aug. 31, when it will play host to Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.).
LOWNDES 66, DREW 7 The Vikings had little trouble in their opener, limiting Drew to 11 first downs. The Titans converted just four of 13 third down opportunities. Lowndes also came up with an interception, recovered two fumbles and blocked a punt. The Vikings will play host to Chamblee on Friday at Martin Stadium. The Bulldogs, who play in Region 5-5A, opened with a 42-7 loss at Forsyth Central. Drew will meet Riverdale on Friday. THOMASVILLE 15, CAIRO 14 Coach Zach Grage’s Bulldogs scored a touchdown and a 2-point conversion with 1:37 remaining to defeat Cairo 15-14 on Friday at West Thomas Stadium. Thomasville, which will travel to Moultrie to meet Colquitt County on Friday, Aug. 31, trailed 14-0 when the Syrupmakers scored with 7:25 left in the game.
The Bulldogs then drove 80 yards in six plays with Tan Gelin scoring from 8 yards out. Marc Davis’s extra point cut the deficit in half with 6:06 remaining. After forcing a three-and-out, Thomasville went 65 yards in seven plays, with Gelin scoring a 19-yard run to pull the Bulldogs to within one. Instead of sending out Davis to attempt to tie the game, Grage elected to attempt a 2-point conversion. And the Bulldogs converted it for the win when Kevin Cochran made a diving catch of Chad Mascoe’s pass in the end zone. Thomasville will play host to 1-0 Thomas County Central on Friday.Cairo will travel to Bainbridge on Friday.
VALDOSTA 45, MAYNARD JACKSON 27 Valdosta found itself on the wrong end of 21-16 halftime score against Maynard Jackson in front of the home fans at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium on Friday. But after turning the ball over three times in the first two quarters, the Wildcats got back on track after intermission and cruised to a 45-27 victory. In the final two quarters, the Wildcats allowed just 85 yards of offense and six points. Offensively, Valdosta rolled up 529 yards, including 202 on the ground. Rajaez Mosley gained 129 on 15 carries. Quarterback Tate Rodemaker completed 17-of-30 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns. The Wildcats will go to Tift County on Friday. Maynard Jackson will go to Therrell.
