CAMILLA, Ga. — Brookwood’s Shane Boggs, an offensive-minded head coach, was quite giddy with his defense Friday night.
In the season opener at Westwood, the Warriors allowed just one touchdown, overcame eight penalties and three lost fumbles on offense to emerge victorious 17-6.

“I think as far as overall impressions, I’m proud of how hard we played. I’m really pleased with how we played on defense,” Boggs said. “I think in the end, what I’ll remember this game by was that it was ugly and our guys showed a lot of guts.”
Brookwood’s defensive front harassed Westwood quarterback Albert Stringer all game long. He was held to just five completions and was sacked five times.
While the Warriors’ defense sizzled, the offense fizzled much of the game. Whether it was high snaps or a holding penalty that negated a 93-yard touchdown run in the first half, the Warriors’ miscues kept them from putting up more points.
“We had so many opportunities offensively. It takes 11 and the coach and we all made mistakes that cost us at times,” Boggs said. “We’ll focus on self-improvement and get it right.”
Several high snaps halted the Warriors’ momentum on offense, including one that eluded quarterback Joe Parker and resulted in a fumble.
The special teams unit also failed to capitalize on two field goal attempts, including one that was blocked on the game’s opening drive. But the Warriors’ special teams did block two punts and one field goal.

Brookwood running back Nick Knifer sealed the Warriors’ victory with a 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. That followed Westwood’s lone score, which cut the lead to 10-6.
The Warriors did sizzle on offense at times in the first half. Running back Vincent Yokley rumbled 44 yards up the gut of the Wildcats defense in the first half. Parker connected with Ben Parrott for a 29-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the first quarter to account for Brookwood’s only touchdown of the half.
Parker threw for 72 yards and ran for 40. Yokley paced Brookwood’s rushing attack with 63 yards.
