Bulldogs win big on the road to open season

The GMC Prep Bulldogs’ road trip to open the football season was a fruitful one Friday night as they brought home a 35-7 win against Glascock County.
The Bulldogs wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard in 2018 by stopping the Panthers cold their first drive of the game and driving down the ensuing possession to get into the end zone. The hot start was a sign of things to come.
“We were able to drive the ball, which is always a great thing for us,” said GMC Prep head coach Steven Simpson over the phone after the win. “Overall it was a pretty good night. The offense did some good things running the football as well as throwing it.”
Senior fullback Ramari Lewis led the way for the Bulldogs in the ground game when it came to scoring at least, hitting pay dirt twice in the season opener.
“I thought Ramari ran the ball really hard, which was great for us,” Simpson said.
Sophomore quarterback Grayson Hopkins also had a good night according to the head coach, throwing a pair of touchdowns and showing great poise by tucking the football away and running whenever he saw daylight. Malcolm Clayton and Armanius White were on the receiving end of the sophomore’s two scoring throws, and Mason Yearwood ran in the Bulldogs’ other touchdown on the night.
As often is the case after season openers, GMC Prep’s head coach saw some things that need cleaning up as the team forges ahead.
“We got some first game motion penalties and some holding penalties that we need to clean up,” Simpson said. “There were some formation alignment issues that you could tell were from nerves. But those are the things you expect with first game jitters. The good thing is that every kid on the roster played, so that was great.”
