VALDOSTA — The Lowndes County Commission weighed zoning changes, new appointments and the repair of a pump lift station during its work session Monday.
County Commission will make the final determination on two zoning cases during its meeting Tuesday.
The first is a case to rezone 4.65 acres at 4893 Phillips Road and 4877 Beaver Lane from estate agriculture to residential. The case was triggered after a family combined three plots of land.
The second case is to rezone 8.57 acres on Mulligan Road from residential agriculture and residential to a planned development.
The case was met with some opposition at the Greater Lowndes Planning Commission from residents in the area, but the planning commission voted to recommend approval for the case.
The development will have approximately 35 houses in it, said Carmella Braswell, planning and zoning administrator.
The county will appoint two members to the Keep Lowndes/Valdosta Beautiful board. Of the two spots needing reappointment, one, Vivian Miller-Cody, has asked for reappointment.
Adam Floyd is not seeking reappointment and the county will appoint a new board member to replace him Tuesday.
The county has been notified that it has received $420,000 in grant money that will be used to fund the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council on behalf of the Lowndes County Juvenile Court. The money is used to fund discretionary programs.
Along with the grant, the agenda item includes a memorandum of understanding with Evidence Based Associates to continue providing function family therapy services to youth recommended by the Lowndes County Juvenile Court system.
The Pine Grove lift station pump is currently in disrepair, and staff has recommended repairing the pump for $12,671.60 rather than replacing the pump for $25,438, according to county records.
The Pine Grove lift station is a duplex that serves the Bemiss, North Lowndes area, according to county officials. It is currently running on one pump.
Commissioners are expected to vote on renewing the county’s property and liability insurance and adopt current board of health rules.
The county will hold its regular meeting 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, in the Lowndes County Commission Chambers. The meeting is open to the public.
