VARNELL, Ga. — A man who Varnell Police Chief Lyle Grant said had committed an act of domestic violence “blatantly barricaded” himself inside his apartment on Cattleman Drive on Sunday until officers busted in, found him wrapped in sheets under a bed and used a Taser to “gain compliance.”
Jason McCall Gowing, 48, of 413 Cattleman Drive-6, Dalton, was being held Monday in the Whitfield County
jail awaiting a bond hearing. He was charged by the Varnell Police Department with battery (family violence), cruelty to children in the first degree, reckless conduct, disorderly conduct, maintaining a disorderly house, willful obstruction of law officers, kidnapping (minor), false imprisonment and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a felony.
In a posting by Grant on the Varnell Police Department’s Facebook page, he said officers sought to contact Gowing around 7 a.m. after a report of domestic violence that morning. Grant said an officer found “physical signs (of) abuse present on the victim and witnessed by her four children …”
When officers showed up at Gowing’s apartment to interview him, Grant said Gowing “blatantly refused” to answer the door and “(w)as heard knocking back on the walls/doors taunting police and obstructing the investigation.”
Grant said he and Lt. Greg Fowler arrived after officers had created a safety perimeter and the decision was made to evacuate residents from nearby homes “due to not knowing if the suspect was armed with firearms or other weapons that could create a safety hazard …”
Grant said it was decided to “create an entry team …” Officers tried to open the door with a key given to them by the property owner, but the door was “blatantly barricaded” and a “forceful” entry was made into the apartment.
Officers found Gowing under a bed in a bedroom in his underwear and wrapped in sheets. He refused to “comply with commands” when they removed the mattress, Grant said.
“ … officers had to pull him out from under the bed by physical force,” Grant said. “ … the suspect … wouldn’t allow himself to be placed into handcuffs.”
“… based on his actions” the officers were forced to use a Taser “to gain compliance to fully effect the arrest.”
Grant said Gowing was not injured, refused medical treatment and “immediately requested a(n) attorney.”
Grant did not immediately return a phone call on Monday seeking more information about the incident.
