MAYO, Fla. — Suwannee and Lafayette took part in a four-team 7v7 competition on Wednesday at Dale Walker Field. The Hornets and the Bulldogs were joined by Taylor County and Oak Hall as each team played three games.
SHS started slow and never seemed to get on track, falling in all three games — 14-0 to Taylor County, 13-8 to Lafayette and 14-13 to Oak Hall.
“Not very good, sloppy,” Suwannee coach Kyler Hall said of the workout. “We have to learn how to compete better. Got to learn how to hate losing more. I know it was 7-on-7, but you want to compete at everything that you do.”
Tyree Taylor and Jaquez Moore worked at both quarterback and wide receiver for the Bulldogs. Taylor completed nine passes and had two catches. Moore completed seven passes to go with two receptions.
Antonio White, Jared Gardner, Isaac Henry, Robert Robinson and Carlton Hall had multiple catches. Hall caught TD passes of 40 and 17 yards.
On the other side, the home Hornets finished the day 2-1 with their only loss coming to Taylor County. LHS won 20-6 against Oak Hall and 13-8 against SHS.
“Good athletes, good competition, a good day for us,” said Lafayette coach Joey Pearson.
In their win against Suwannee, Hornets’ quarterback Jaxson Beach connected with Garris Edwards on a 40-yard bomb and then hit Kewian Reid for a 15-yard score.
Takeaways
Hall, Edwards looking good this summer
Suwannee and Lafayette will be strong at running back again with the return of Carlton Hall (SHS) and Garris Edwards (LHS). Both are proven runners who also have good hands and can catch passes out of the backfield. They’ve done well this summer in 7v7 competition, running a variety of routes.
Henry, White making an impact
Similar to Lafayette, the Bulldogs will be relying upon some new receivers this season. Suwannee lost two of its top three wideouts from 2017 in Brantley Roberson and Demoundre Evans.
Isaac Henry and Antonio White are two of those new receivers. They found ways to get open on Wednesday and also picked up significant yards after the catch.
