DAR event to honor WW I soldiers

MOULTRIE, Ga. — Patriotism and red, white and blue decorations will abound at the annual Independence Day Observance on July 4 at the Colquitt County Courthouse Square. The festivities will begin at 9:30 a.m.
As a part of the World War I Centennial Commemoration, the John Benning Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution will pay tribute to the soldiers from Colquitt County who lost their lives in the war. The Great War, also referred to as “the war to end all wars,” ended on Nov. 11, 1918.
Colquitt County High School’s award-winning Marine Corps JROTC will be featured in several aspects of the program.
Tribute will also be given to several American patriotic traditions that are products of World War I, among them “God Bless America,” The American’s Creed and poppies.
Thirty-four Colquitt Countians lost their lives during this first global conflict. Each name will be called and a memorial flag erected. Descendants will be asked to stand as their family member’s name is called.
Citizens are urged to come spend an hour with their fellow Americans to celebrate the nation’s 242nd birthday and then spend the rest of the day with friends and family.
