Valdosta State Prison hiring
VALDOSTA — The Georgia Department of Labor is helping Valdosta State Prison recruit correction officers. The event will be held June 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Valdosta Career Center located at 221 S. Ashley Street. Qualifications to be a correctional officer include:
• U.S. citizenship, minimum age 18
• No felony convictions and ability to pass a physical training test

Crossen to be new Dalton assistant police chief
DALTON, Ga. — Whitfield County native Chris Crossen is being promoted to assistant chief of the Dalton Police Department. The DPD presented Crossen for promotion at Tuesday’s Public Safety Commission meeting. There was not a quorum of commission members present to vote to confirm the promotion. The commission will vote on confirmation of Crossen’s promotion at its next meeting. Crossen was selected for promotion by Chief Cliff Cason after a selection process involving six candidates. “It’s been a fantastic ride, I’ve loved every day that I’ve worked for the Dalton Police Department,” Crossen said of his 22-year journey from patrol officer to the agency’s second-in-command. “I love being a police officer and I count myself as one of the luckiest people around to have found my calling and my profession and I love it to this day.” Crossen is a Whitfield County native and a graduate of both Northwest Whitfield High School and Dalton State College, earning an associate’s degree in 1994. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Georgia State University in 1996 and a master’s degree in public administration from Columbus State University in 2012. Crossen has been a member of the DPD since April 1996 when he began his career as a patrol officer. After serving as a detective from January 2005 until July 2006, he was promoted to sergeant and served as a patrol supervisor and later as a supervisor in criminal investigations. In 2010 he was promoted to lieutenant and in July 2015 he was promoted to the rank of captain and was made a division commander.
TOSAC Kids Kamp to stage ‘The Lion King Jr.’
THOMASVILLE — Youngsters participating in Kids Kamp, a new Thomasville On Stage & Company (TOSAC) pilot program, this summer will present “The Lion King Jr.” at the TOSAC Storefront Theater Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Kids Kamp participants have worked daily on the performance. Drama direction is under Pat Orr, a children’s director at TOSAC for 10 years, and assisted by Kimsey Hodge. Musical direction is by Julie and Shane Padgett, music teachers from Lowndes County, and choreographer is Brantley Ivey, a local teacher. The show features 33 young people who have worked very hard to prepare this show for the public. Trammell Thompson plays Mufasa, with Julianne Watson as Rafiki and Megan Clark as Scar. Completing the main characters are Hogan Watson as young Simba, Kyra Clatto as young Nala, Thompson as Simba, Jocelyn Watson at Nala, and Maddie Cobb as Zazu. Emily Hart plays Timon and Cameron Carter is Pumbaa. They are joined by a host of lionesses and hyenas and other animals. Performances Thursday, Friday and Saturday are at 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Adult tickets are $15 and $12 for students.
