Three baseball teams advance to state tournaments

MOULTRIE — Cam Cook cranked out a pair of first-inning home runs to help lead the Colquitt County 14U all-star baseball teams to a 20-0 victory over Crisp County on Saturday in the GRPA District 3 tournament at the Magnolia Sports Complex. The victory ensured the team would join the county’s 10U and 12U all-stars in qualifying for GRPA state tournaments. All three teams won both of their games in the District round robins. The Colquitt County’s two 8U all star teams began District tournament play in Thomasville on Saturday and both will continue to play on Monday. Colquitt County Black won both of its games on Saturday at Remington Park, defeating Mitchell County 9-0 and Thomasville YMCA 7-4. The Black all-stars will face Sumter County at 6 p.m. Monday with a berth in the championship game on the line. Colquitt County 2 dropped its first District game 9-1 to Sumter County, but won its losers bracket opener, eliminating Crisp County 10-8. Colquitt County 2 will meet Thomasville YMCA at 6 p.m. on Monday in it second losers bracket game. The 12U all-stars were challenged in their first game on Saturday, edging Sumter County 7-6. Neko Fann and Eli Hannah each had home runs for Colquitt County in the game. Fann also added a pair of singles; Landon Thomas had a single and a double and R.J. Reynolds and Alex Nelms each had singles. Cook made sure the 12U All-Stars’ second game would not be as close. He hit a three-run homer and a two-run homer in the first inning and added a run-scoring single in his next at bat. Thomas also homered in the first inning. Reynolds added a pair of doubles; Daniel Johnson had a double and a single; Thomas also had a double; Asher Cox had two singles; and Nelms and Logan Strickland each had base hits. Colquitt County took advantage of 10 walks in the first two innings. The 12U state tournament also will be held at the Magnolia Sports Complex, beginning on July 10. Colquitt County will be the host team. Sumter County also advances to the state tournament. The Colquitt County 14U All-Stars had little trouble in their to District games, defeating Crisp County 19-0 and Grady County 13-3. They will advance to the state tournament in Augusta, also beginning July 10. Trace Waller led the offense in the shutout of Crisp County with a home run, a double and a single. Brock Weaver had three singles; Tyler Owens had a double and triple; Will Snipes had a double and a single; Mason Williams, Gary Hill and Hunter Strickland each had two base hits; Jace Autrey had a double; and Gavin Steptoe a single.
In the state tournament berth-clinching win over Grady County, Strickland and Snipes each had a double and a single; Autrey, Steptoe, Hill and Mason Bass each had two singles; and Waller and Mason Williams each added a base hit. Two Colquitt County teams were entered in the 10U machine-pitch round robin and squared off in the first game. Colquitt County Gold defeated Colquitt County Black 10-2 and turned right around and knocked off Thomasville YMCA 13-5 to punch its ticket for the state tournament in Effingham County. Colquitt County Black won its final game, defeating Thomasville YMCA 16-8. In the game between the two Moultrie teams, Jake Walker and Bowen DeRosso led Gold with a pair of doubles. Karter Kight and Kane Morris each had two hits; Logan Plymel had a double; and Adam Beverly, Jamaal Jackson, Hayden Glass and Tyson Hobby each had one single. Tyler Giles and Jaxon Dorminey each had two hits and Bryce Roberts, Landon Weeks, Kaden King, Eli Johnson and Sa’Marrion Reynolds each had one for the Colquitt County Black team. The Black team continued to pound the ball in the win over Thomasville. Hobby had three singles; Walker had two doubles; Plymel had a single and a double; DeRosso, Morris, Glass, Jackson, Dylan Chapman and Ret Turner each had two hits. GIRLS SOFTBALL Two Colquitt County girls softball teams also participated in District tournaments at the Magnolia Complex on Saturday and have advanced to championship games. The 10U girls won their opener, pounding the Thomasville YMCA 19-8 and then had an easy time with Grady County, winning 18-3. Coach Shelly Price’s All-Stars will play for the District championship at 6:50 p.m. Monday. The 10U state championship will be held in Effingham County. The 8U All-Stars, coached by Marc Eure, also won both of their games on Saturday, defeating Bainbridge 19-6 and Lee County 17-9. They, too, will try to claim a District title at 6:50 p.m. on Monday. The GRPA state tournament also will be played at the Magnolia Sports Complex.
