MOULTRIE – When the finals of a tournament – even if it is a summer camp – involve two from your school, that says much about which direction that sport is trending.

Colquitt County High wrestling is in the middle of a busy summer training schedule, one that’s involved two camps so far and one more big one slated for late July in Atlanta.

Last week, coach Benjy Scarbor and his assistants took the Packer wrestlers to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp at Camden County. Here, the coach said there were 300 total participants, 16 being from Colquitt County. This involved both a clinic and live wrestling, so Scarbor’s bunch hit the mat against not only fellow Georgia competitors but also those from Florida and South Carolina.

In one weight class tournament in Kingsland, rising senior Nic Jarvis – a GHSA traditional finalist – was the winner over Colquitt teammate and football lineman Michael Roberts.

This was a camp that involved both live wrestling and technique instruction. At the start of June, right after school let out, the Packer wrestlers went to Adel for an instructional camp put on by Life University.

As for this week, things are split up a bit.

While most of the Packers are practicing in Moultrie in preparation for some duals action at Valdosta High on Thursday afternoon, five members of the team are at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Here, Scarbor said, they are going through a more intensive camp for wrestling, which is a three-day session focused on live wrestling and conditioning.

Those at UTC are Jarvis, Timmy Brinson, Paydon Littleton, Deonte Edwards and Alek Rosales.

Scarbor said they have “traveled up” so far this summer looking for competition. The cap for the summer training will be in Atlanta for a tournament July 28-29.
