JASPER, Fla. — Hamilton County High School has hired a new boys basketball coach.
Eugene Jones, a former assistant coach at FAMU and assistant football coach at Chiles High,
takes over a program with a lot of recent success. The Trojans have gone to the state playoffs the last seven years and made a Final Four appearance during the 2015-16 season and a played in the state title game in 2013-14.
“I’m very excited. There’s a ton of ability here,” said Jones, who will be a head coach for the first time.
The HCHS boys basketball team was coached by Mike Cohen last year and Malcolm
Pollock for the 2016-17 season. Patrick Murphy held the position from 2005-2016 and led HCHS to five district titles and two appearances in the Final Four.
Jones was on the sidelines recently as he coached the Trojans in the Goodwill Games Basketball Tournament in Lake City.
HCHS went 3-1 in the tournament held June 9 and 10 at the Richardson Community Center, coming in second place with Eastside taking the title. Kalel Lanier averaged 12 points per game in Hamilton County’s three wins, Juwan Pierce had 15 ppg and Tony Stockton averaged nearly 13 points per game. Denandre Johnson made the all-tournament team.
