- The new crosswalk features flashing lights that pedestrians turn on at the push of a button to let drivers know they're crossing the street.
MOULTRIE, Ga. — A new crosswalk is now in operation on 31st Avenue Southeast, adjacent to Colquitt Regional Medical Center. According to Colquitt Regional Medical Center President & CEO Jim Matney, the crosswalk was necessary.
“As the hospital continues to grow, the traffic grows as well,” Matney said.
City Manager Pete Dillard said, “Colquitt Regional Medical Center wanted to protect their employees, so they purchased the needed equipment and partnered with the city to provide engineering and installation, creating a safer situation.”
The solar-powered crosswalk is complete with flashing lights giving motorist notification to stop for pedestrians crossing the street. Pedestrians walk up to the crosswalk, push a button that will then notify traffic of the crossing.
“We were glad to partner on the project,” said City Engineering Director Greg Monfort. “We were able to administer the project and provided labor and design.”
Monfort said the project took about 45 days to complete.
