Armed robber sentenced to 10 years in prison

DALTON, Ga. — A Dalton man who pleaded guilty in May to the armed robbery of a convenience store in June of 2017 was sentenced this week to 10 years in prison and 10 years on probation by Superior Court Judge Jim Wilbanks.
According to records in the clerk of court’s office, Elander Johnson pleaded guilty to armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He had been indicted on additional charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Johnson was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine plus court costs and surcharges, perform 300 hours of community service, undergo alcohol and drug counseling, abide by a curfew during his probation and be subject to random drug screens. He must also remain off of the property of any Mapco convenience store.
Johnson was arrested in the early morning hours of June 3, 2017, after a report of a robbery at the Mapco convenience store at 811 Riverbend Road by a black man dressed in black who fled on foot. Johnson was found by Dalton Police Department officers in an apartment on Richards Street. A detective found a handgun believed to have been used in the robbery and a black hoodie in the bathroom.
