MOULTRIE, Ga. — American Legion Post 324 sends young men to Boys State every year, but it’s less common for the Moultrie post to be able to send a young woman to Girls State.

This year, the post has committed to pay the $300 tuition for a rising senior to attend the program at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro June 10-15, according to Robin Poole, the Legionnaire in charge of the program for the local post.

“We have an outstanding candidate at this time with a homeschooled young lady with excellent credentials,” Poole said, “but health issues may prevent her from attending. As a backup plan we are asking the community to please provide an alternate candidate in case this does happen.”

Girls State, like Boys State for young men, consists of sessions of instruction on leadership, politics and government operation. It culminates in elections to city, county and state offices in a mythical 51st state. College scholarships are open to competition for all attendees, and two attendees are selected to represent Georgia at Girls Nation.
