DAR chapter earns state honors

Members of the John Benning Chapter of DAR attended the state conference where the chapter earned Platinum Level Honor Roll recognition. Representing the chapter at the state conference were Sonja Thompson, Janice Barry, Nancy Coleman, Jean Gay and Paula Neely.  

MOULTRIE, Ga. — The John Benning Chapter of the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), recently received Platinum Level Honor Roll from the Georgia State Society. This is the highest level of recognition awarded by the state society.  

The chapter also received a Hightower Award for its support of DAR schools.

In addition, the chapter was recognized as the top scoring chapter in the southwest district for the Chapter Achievement Award sponsored by the national society.  

The chapter also received a Trekker Award for achieving a                  20 percent increase in membership.

These honors recognize the chapter for its many activities during 2017 to promote education, historic preservation and patriotism, according to a press release from the chapter. The chapter sponsored the annual county-wide Independence Day Observance on the Courthouse Square, participated in Memorial Day and Veterans Day and other veteran activities, observed Flag Day, conducted genealogy workshops, and supported DAR schools. The chapter awarded scholarships and medals to outstanding American history and ROTC students.

DAR is a volunteer women’s service organization that honors and preserves the legacy of our patriot ancestors. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership. DAR volunteers are willing to provide guidance and assistance with genealogy needed to document lineage.
