- Ty Leggett tries to break through the defense at Colquitt County High's second spring football scrimmage Friday in Moultrie.
MOULTRIE – Mark it down, 43 for the offense, 37 for the defense. Let that be the official final score for the final intra-squad spring football scrimmage for the Colquitt County High Packers. They avoided any stormy weather conditions for Friday evening on Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium, and each side of the ball had its highlights that racked up so many points in a special scoring system.
First downs got the offense points just like touchdowns and field goals. The defense could score by stopping a drive and picking off a pass, something that happened often on Friday, hence the high total for those wearing black jerseys with gold numbers.
Head coach Rush Propst had first and second units beginning drives progressively further up field as the night wore on. It all started on the offense’s 20-yard line and with an empty backfield. Quarterback Jaycee Harden went over the middle to Tyrique Williams for 15 yards and a first down. Jay Ward stopped Daijun Edwards for 3rd-and-10, but an issue Propst saw too many times in the first scrimmage last Saturday happened again. The defense jumped offsides.
Ty Leggett goes left tackle for first down on the 48, but then Harden’s offense looked at fourth down on the defense’s 46-yard line. Edwards shot through the hole up the middle and scored the touchdown.
For the second unit, the first play also resulted in a first down run of 12 yards for Mar’Kaybion Spradley. Marvion McDonald played quarterback in these series, and when he handled a low snap his pass was completed to Tyler Walker. He shot upfield himself all the way to the defense’s 7. But the drive bogged down, both with gang tackling and more offsides flags. But JaJuan Williams stopped the 3rd-and-goal run on the 3, so Ryan Fitzgerald went to the field for the chip-shot 19-yard field goal.
Some drives Friday only lasted a few plays. Kendrick Neloms tipped Harden’s first pass way up in the air, waited for it to come down and earned the first defensive points on the interception.
So it was back to the second unit and another short drive. Only, this one ended with offensive points and McDonald’s up-top ball hauled in by Walker for the 65-yard touchdown.
That was it for 80-yard drives; now the football was spotted on the offense’s 25-yard line. Kam Woods and Marcus Anderson put the first team on 3rd-and-4, but Harden’s tunnel screen to Desmond Davis moved the chains to the 38. On 3rd-and-10, an interception machine for the Packer secondary, Jay Ward, hauled in the deep throw.
As the second quarter got underway, the Packer defense had 10 points thanks to Neloms’ trip of Edwards. McDonald went on to show off more deep-ball ability with a 55-yard completion to the defense’s 20-yard line. Fitzgerald tried to put more offensive points on the board, but his 23-yard field goal hit the right post.
Propst next set up 60-yard drives, and Harden had a sure third-down completion pop out of the receiver’s hands into those of the safety Woods. With that, Colquitt’s defense was within seven points of the offense. The second-unit defenders earned a blitz sack (just a touch, no hitting the QB) on McDonald to add two more points to their side (26 offense, 21 defense). That took the scrimmage into halftime.
Early in the third quarter, both Neloms and Williams made sacks closing that gap all the way to one point. Anderson nearly made another interception, but on third down it was Rashad Revels’ tackle that shifted the lead in points to the defense. The lead widened to four points (26 O, 30 D) with the game’s fourth intercepted pass.
Next, drives would start on the defense’s side of the 50, and Edwards rushed for 12 yards on first down to the 28. Michael Roberts, playing the nose tackle up front, recorded the tackle-for-a-loss. With the down marker at 4th-and-8, Fitzgerald snuck the football inside the right post for a 43-yard field goal.
Tucker Pitts took his turn at quarterback, and the sophomore started 2-for-2 for 11 yards. Callon Kubiak’s rush from linebacker stopped the drive, but it would be the last play for the defense to be ahead in points.
Starting from the 15, Edwards scored his second touchdown, an 8-yarder. One final intercepted pass followed, then Propst called for the ’49-second drill.’ Harden completed passes to tight end Josh Hadley and Leggett outside to get a first down, but the defense held on the last play.
Pitts broke a 37-all tie in points with a 51-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-11.
