FFA recognizes award winners at banquet

MOULTRIE, Ga. — On May 8, the Colquitt County FFA Chapter held the 88th Annual FFA member and parent banquet. Members from the Willie J. Williams Middle School FFA Chapter, C.A. Gray Middle Chapter, C.A. Gray Jr. High Chapter, and Colquitt County High Chapter were recognized for each of their accomplishments during the 2017-2018 school year. The Star of Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star Greenhand, and Star Discovery were also announced.

Each year high school students have the opportunity to apply for a local contest that is sponsored for a trip to the National FFA Convention and Expo held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Below are the names of each winner and the sponsor of the award.

• The President’s Award was presented to Libba Johnson and was sponsored by Funston Gin Company.  

• The Ag Mechanics Award was presented to Garrett Griner and was sponsored by DPW Locksmith.  

• The Home Improvement Award was presented to Kaitlyn Hart and was sponsored by Baell Mercantile Company.  

• The Crop Production Award was presented to Blake Richter and was sponsored by Whittington Insurance.  

• The Leadership Award was presented to Libba Johnson and was sponsored by Brent Chitty State Farm Insurance.  

• The Cotton Production Award was presented to Blake Richter and was sponsored by Mobley Gin.  

• The Home Garden Award was presented to Jordan Barfield and was sponsored by Farmer’s Seed Company.  

• The Livestock Award was presented to Victoria Barber and was sponsored by Moultrie Livestock.  

• The Record Keeping Award was presented to Montana Hall.  

• The Horticulture Award was presented to Patti Mitchell and was sponsored by Gay’s Tire Service.  

• The advisor’s trip was sponsored by Demott Tractor Company.

Libba Johnson was named the Colquitt County Star in Ag Placement which was sponsored by the Colquitt County Farm Bureau. Patti Mitchell was named the Colquitt County Star in Agriscience which was sponsored by Rowell Auctions.  

Montana Hall was awarded the Randolph Gibbs Memorial Scholarship, a scholarship sponsored by the family of Randolph Gibbs, in memory of him.

The Star Greenhand was awarded to J.T. Harbin and Mason Bass was awarded the Star Discovery. The Washington Leadership Conference Scholarship was awarded to J.T. Harbin, which was sponsored by Baker Farms. Raylee Sparman was awarded the Outstanding Leadership Award.

This year Colquitt County had six state wins in Career Development Events, two proficiency state wins, and a State Star. Presley Hamilton, Kaitlyn Hart, Logan Moore, and Mary Logan Tostenson won the Ag Sales CDE. Kirk Beacham won the Lawn Mower Operations and Maintenance CDE, EMC Wiring, and Senior Prepared Public Speaking. Victoria Barber, Patti Mitchell, and Mitchell Riley won the Ag Marketing CDE. Vadehi Patel won the Job Interview CDE. Libba Johnson won her proficiency in the area of Small Animal Production and Garrett Griner won his proficiency in the area Wildlife Management. Libba Johnson was named the South Region Star as well as named a State Star at the 90th FFA State Convention.
