LIVE OAK, Fla. — An expected pitchers’ duel turned into a slugfest as Bolles pounded three home runs to defeat Suwannee 10-5 on Tuesday.

Even as both squads ran out their outstanding ace pitchers, there were a combined 19 hits — nine going for extra bases.

Hueston Morrill hit a two-run homer, Wyatt Morrill went 2-4 with a pair of doubles and Bo Bonds added three hits. But it wasn’t enough for the home Bulldogs, who fell behind 6-1 after three innings and 8-1 after the top of the fifth.

SHS plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth to get back in the game, but couldn’t finish off the comeback in the regional semifinal.

“It shows a lot about a team to have enough character, enough grit about you to keep fighting back down 8-1,” said Suwannee coach Justin Bruce. “We didn’t come out with our best stuff.

“You build off the fact that you had a good season, a good run. I’m excited for where Suwannee baseball is going to go.”

Bolles, which had totaled 12 hits in three earlier games with Suwannee this season, nearly reached that mark on Tuesday, finishing with 11 hits. Bryson Kirksey had two home runs and Hunter Barco hit a two-run homer at a crucial moment.

After Suwannee’s big inning, Barco blasted a 3-1 curveball over the wall in left field to put Bolles up 10-5 in the top of the sixth.

“We got behind some of their hitters. We put them in good counts and they took advantage of it,” Bruce said.

Hueston Morrill got the start for Suwannee and pitched three innings. Two of the six runs he allowed were earned runs as SHS committed two errors early. Bonds pitched the final four innings.

Barco threw five innings to get the win and Nathan Skinner got the final six outs for Bolles (22-5), which moves on to a regional final.

Suwannee finished the season 16-12. It was a good season for the Bulldogs, who won their first district title since 2015 and earned their first playoff victory since 2011.
