Woman killed in Mother’s Day robbery attempt

TIFTON, Ga. — A Tifton native is dead after an early morning robbery attempt on Mother’s Day.
Zeni Marie Travis, 47, of Tifton was shot and killed at approximately 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning when she was riding along with her mother, who drives a cab, according to Marko Jones with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Sylvester office.
Tift County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call about a shooting located at the corner of South Park Avenue and Mathis Street at 1:30 a.m.
According to Jones, Travis was riding along with her mother to answer a request for a ride. The mother and daughter picked up the fare, took them to the requested location and then were held up.
Travis was shot by the robber, according to Jones. The only description given of the offender was that he was a black male.
Travis was transported to Tift Regional Medical Center after the shooting, where she died.
Jones said that Travis’ body was transported to the GBI crime lab in Macon for autopsy, and that the case is ongoing.
