MOULTRIE, Ga. — The lane shift Thursday on State Route 133 between Berlin and Morven marks another milestone for the highway as the contractors for the state Department of Transportation get closer and closer to four-laning it from Moultrie to Valdosta.

The long-awaited widening consists of five projects, two of which are already finished. The other three are expected to be complete this year, including one scheduled for completion by the end of next month.

Juanita Birmingham, spokeswoman for the Georgia DOT, addressed questions about the work’s progress on Thursday.

Starting at the south, near the Lowndes-Brooks County line, the projects are:

• From Brooks County Road 276/Troupeville Road to Brooks County Road 10/Pauline Church Road (Project 0000543) was completed July 30, 2016.

• From Pauline Church Road to Brooks County Road 1/Old Quitman Adel Road (Project 0000544) started June 2016. Completion of the 5.43 miles is expected Oct. 31, 2018.

• From Brooks County Road 1 to Colquitt County Road 256 (Project 0000545) started February 2016. The original completion date for the 9.63 miles was expected to be May 15 — this coming Tuesday — but has been pushed back. Birmingham said completion is now expected sometime this summer.

• From County Road 256 to County Road 388/Hawthorne Drive (Project 0000546) is expected to be complete June 30, 2018. It includes 7.86 miles.

• From Hawthorne Drive to Veterans Parkway (Project 431780) was completed July 31, 2016. It consists of 4.55 miles of highway.

Meanwhile, efforts to four-lane the highway between Moultrie and Albany may be getting closer too.

Information on the Georgia DOT website sets program years for stages of each of the five projects of that section, and three are scheduled for right-of-way acquisition this year.

Starting at Moultrie and going north:

• From south of U.S. Highway 319 to Colquitt County Road 187/Mike Horne Road (Project 0000520) is scheduled for right-of-way work in 2018 and utilities and construction in 2020. It includes 13.87 miles of work.

• From Worth County Road 161/Carlton Road to Mike Horne Road (Project 0015478) is scheduled for preliminary engineering this year, right-of-way in 2020 and utilities and construction in 2023. This 8.46-mile stretch involves a pair of one-way streets through the city of Doerun.

• From north of the Colquitt County line to north of State Route 112 (Project 0000519) is scheduled for right of way in 2019 and utilities and construction in 2020. It includes 6.49 miles.

• From north of State Route 112 to north of Dougherty County Road 459/County Line Road (Project 0000475) is scheduled for right-of-way in 2018 and utilities and construction in 2019. It includes 3.73 miles.

• From north of Dougherty County Road 459/County Line Road to north of Dougherty County Road 540/Holly Drive (Project 0000473) is scheduled for right-of-way in 2018 and utilities and construction in 2020. It includes 8.11 miles.

All those dates are officials’ expectations and could change as conditions change.
