Track and Field: Fourteen area athletes qualify for state meet

- Suwannee High's Micah Hilliard qualified for two events at the state championship meet. Thirteen other area athletes also will compete at the state meet May 4-5 in Jacksonville.
LIVE OAK, Fla. — Athletes from Suwannee, Branford and Lafayette have qualified for the FHSAA Track and Field State Championships. The Buccaneers (Class 1A) had four individual qualifiers as well as one relay team. The Bulldogs (Class 2A) will send four participants while the Hornets (Class 1A) will send one.
The state meet will be held May 4-5 at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville.

The BHS girls 4×400 team of Zamaria Granado, Hannah Terry, Trinity Thomas and Kaylah Johnson ran a time of 4:21.52 in a regional meet to earn a spot at state. Nathalia Veal (2.55 meters) will compete in pole vault and Thomas (10.05 meters) is in the shot put.
For the BHS boys, pole vaulter CJ Pepper had a mark of 3.60 meters and Dakota Stevens ran the 400-meter dash in 53.11 to qualify.
Lafayette’s Jasmine Lewis finished third at regionals with a jump of 10.94 meters in the triple jump. Out of the 24 Class 1A qualifiers for the girls triple jump, she is ranked fifth going into the state meet.
For the SHS boys, Micah Hilliard and Timmy Choe qualified for multiple events. Hunter Merola earned a spot in the pole vault.
Hilliard ran a 1:57.25 in the 800-meter run and a 4:25.50 in the 1600-meter run. He’s ranked fifth in the 800 and sixth in the 1600 going into the state meet.
Choe will compete in the 1600 (4:32.59) and the 3200 (9:42.66).

Merola (4.05 meters) finished second at regionals. There are only three athletes with a better mark than Merola.
For the SHS girls, Elexxis Davis qualified in the 100-meter hurdles (16.16).
