MOULTRIE, Ga. — Polls will be open at two Moultrie precincts Tuesday for the runoff in a special election for a Colquitt County Commission seat.

Voters in District 1 can cast ballots from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the runoff election. Darius Dawson and Barbara Jelks came out in second and first place, respectively, in a seven-candidate field seeking to finish the term of the late Commissioner Luke Strong Jr., who died in September.

The winner in the nonpartisan runoff will take office and serve through the end of the year.

Voters who live in the district can vote at their regular polling place at Shaw or Moultrie.

The runoff was necessary after none of the seven candidates in the race reached a majority of votes.

In the March 20 election Jelks received 90 out of 278 votes, while Dawson finished with 57 votes.

Voters in the district will return to the polls on May 22 for the general primary election, when those two candidates, along with Jeron Bridges, Susie Magwood-Thomas and James Weeks will be on the Democratic ballot.

Stacey Williams qualified as a Republican and will face the Democratic nominee in the fall general election, with the winner taking office Jan. 1, 2019 for a four-year term.
