Darton State College to present ‘Godspell’
DALTON, Ga. — Featuring an eclectic blend of songs ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, a small group of followers helps Jesus Christ through different parables using a variety of games, storytelling techniques and comic timing in the musical “Godspell,” which will be performed at Dalton State College. The musical runs nightly at 8 from April 20-22 in the upper level of the college’s Pope Student Center. Tickets are $7 online at Eventbrite.com or at the door. Tickets are free to current DSC students, faculty and staff with their Roadrunner Card. “As far as I know this is the first time a musical has been performed at Dalton State,” said Kim Correll, lecturer in communication and theater and director of the musical. “I am so excited for everyone to see this amazing cast. They are so talented and so dedicated. I believe you will be highly entertained and uplifted by this show.”
Air Force One lands at Moody AFB
VALDOSTA, Ga. — People around Moody Air Force Base who thought they saw Air Force One at the base Thursday were right. One of the two VC-25A jets operated by the Air Force for transporting the commander-in-chief was flying around South Georgia as part of an “operational testing regimen,” said 1st Lt. Kaitlin Toner of Moody’s public affairs office. “This testing program includes the requirement to conduct multiple takeoffs, approaches and landings under a variety of conditions,” she said. No passengers were aboard the plane, Toner said. People from Lowndes, Berrien and Lanier counties posted to social media about spotting the famous plane. Though the VC-25As — essentially modified Boeing 747s — are commonly known as “Air Force One,” that callsign is only used for an aircraft when the president is on board. This began in 1953 after an incident in which the president’s plane and a commercial flight were both using identical call signs in flight, posing a safety hazard. Home base for the presidential planes is Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where they are part of the Presidential Airlift Group, 89th Airlift Wing.

When police arrived shortly after 6:17 p.m. to Veterans Parkway South and Overlook Drive witnesses reported that the driver had run into the wood line. When police caught up with the driver, Harold A. Adams, he told them that he left the scene of where he had wrecked the 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe because his license was suspended. Adams did not know why he drove off the roadway. Adams also told officers that he had a few drinks earlier in the day, police said, and refused a test for alcohol in his system. Adams, 57, 711 E. Broad St., Savannah, was charged with driving under the influence, driving with suspended license and failure to maintain lane. He also is wanted on an active arrest warrant in Coffee County, police said.

City of Tifton files lawsuit against opioid manufacturers and distributors
ATHENS, Ga. — The City of Tifton filed a lawsuit against multiple manufacturers and distributors of opioids, seeking to hold them responsible for their role in creating the opioid epidemic, according to a press reelase. The city is represented by Blasingame, Burch, Garrard & Ashley, P.C. (BBGA), of Athens. The lawsuit targets more than 20 companies that manufacture and distribute opioids, and alleges the defendants misrepresented the addictive risks of opioids, fraudulently marketed opioids as a treatment for chronic pain, and did not follow federal laws regarding the reporting of excessive opioid sales in certain areas. The case was filed in federal court and is expected to be transferred to the national multi-district litigation in Ohio regarding the opioid epidemic, where more than 400 are currently pending. The complaint alleges that the City of Tifton filed the lawsuit to “eliminate the hazard to public health and safety caused by the opioid epidemic, to abate the nuisance caused thereby, and to recoup monies that have been spent, or will be spent, because of defendants’ false, deceptive and unfair marketing and/or unlawful diversion of prescription opioids.” The lawsuit targets manufacturers including Purdue Pharma, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Cephalon, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Endo Health Solutions, Allergan PLC, and Actavis. Distributors McKesson Corp., Cardinal Health, and AmerisourceBergen are also named as defendants. The City of Tifton joins 18 Georgia counties in the lawsuit.
