Arts in Black Festival highlights black artists, musicians

TIFTON, Ga. — The 32nd annual Arts in Black Festival will take place April 20-21.

The talent show will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 20 at the Tift Theatre for the Performing Arts.

The talent show will feature performances from students ranging in age from elementary school age to college age. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded.

Akeria Lockett, who is chairperson of the talent show this year, said there will be “new talent and fresh faces” this year.

In addition to the talent show acts, there will be entertainment provided by the Tift County High School Jazz Ensemble and Zone 3. Felicia Howard will be the emcee.

Admission will be $5 per person.

The last rehearsal will be Tues. Apr. 17 from 5-7 p.m. at the community center on South Central Avenue.

The festival will take place with the opening ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Apr. 21 in Fulwood Park.

County commissioner Donnie Hester and Mayor Julie Smith will open the festival.

Performances begin with Dancer’s Pointe at 11 a.m., followed by the poetry contest, Essence Band from Albany and Harold E. Thomas and Danger Zone.

The poetry competition will feature approximately 25 students from preschool age up through high school age reciting both original and learned poems.

Additionally there will be vendors from around the area selling food and crafts.

Finally, all attendees are entered into a drawing to win $200. The winner must be present to win.
