Colquitt County High’s boys placed third after a loss to second-place Lowndes and a victory over last-place Tift County.

Packers coach Mell Wier said one of his doubles teams was leading and the last of three singles matches split two sets when Lowndes earned the third clinching victory to start things off.

“We started slow in that first match,” said Wier. “That’s kind of how it’s been throughout the season.”

In the regular season, though, Wier said all five matches play to completion, and often the Packers will finish strong in that situation.

Such was the case when Colquitt faced Tift later on Wednesday for third place. The first two completed matches were split. Aaron Long and John Melvin Herndon won a quick doubles match, but Wier said he pulled his top singles player, Hayden Holloway, in his second set due to shoulder stiffness.

Nathan Corley and Alyn Herndon won the other doubles match, but Tift County took No. 2 singles.

That brought the team match down to No. 3 singles, which went to a tiebreaker. Colquitt’s Carlos Fuller prevailed.

The Lady Packers tennis team placed third in the Region 1-7A tournament Wednesday at Camden County High.

The Lady Packers lost the first round to Lowndes.

No. 2 singles Sydney Wheeler lost the first set 3-6 and was down the second set 0-4. She battled back to tie the score 4-4 when her match was pulled.

“I was proud of Sydney,” said coach Amber Hurst. “She really dug deep and played hard. I have no doubt she would have pulled out the set to split.”

The No. 1 doubles team of Emma Kate Whatley and Beylee Roberts lost their first set 2-6 but was tied in the second set 4-4 when their match was pulled.

The Lady Packers went on to beat Tift County for be third time this season to secure the No. 3 seed for the GHSA Class 7A tournament. Bella Underwood made quick work of her opponent winning at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0. Wheeler followed shortly behind winning 6-1, 6-0. The third point win came from Whatley and Roberts in doubles winning 6-2, 6-4.

The No. 2 doubles team of Karli Yarbrough and Bella Lawson, who went in for an injured Annabelle Roberts, lost 4-6, 4-6. Three singles Anna Marie Saunders was pulled but was ahead 6-2, 3-2 in her match.

Camden County swept Lowndes in both finals.

The GHSA playoffs begin Thursday with the Packer boys going to Campbell High, No. 2 seed from Region 2-7A, in Smyrna.

The Lady Packers will meet Region 2-7A No. 2 seed East Coweta in Sharpsburg.
