MOULTRIE – In a stunning turn of developments, Lowndes High scored in the first overtime half to defeat the Colquitt County High boys soccer team 2-1 Tuesday at Packer Park.
The loss dropped Colquitt to 4-2 in Region 1-7A, and that was Jimbo Jarvis’ team’s final league match for 2018. The Lowndes Vikings are now 4-1, but there’s one more match for them in the region April 17 vs. Tift Co.
The Pack won the first meeting with Lowndes 3-2 in Valdosta.
Regulation play had as much intensity and near misses for both sides as fitting a rivalry and match that could decide No. 1 in a region.
No near miss hurt Colquitt more than the penalty kick at 15:13 of the second half that sailed high. Jose Moreno drew the foul in the box running with the ball, something he found few chances to do.
Juan Pascual came close a pair of occasions after the failed PK, and Raymon Garcia missed wide when he was up close at 6:35.
On a late free kick, Abrahm Sanchez took a header saved.
The call from the Packer bench was to go on the whistle when the match began. It was Lowndes stealing the ball, though, but Emmanuel Rodriguez stopped them, starting a big game for the Colquitt back line.
Pascual took the first shot saved at 38:39. Lowndes’ first chance was on a free kick at the right side of the box, but Eric Leon headed it away.
Senior goalkeeper Blayton Duncan’s first save on an active night was at 31:51. He was also all over a crossing pass at the 25-minute mark.
For Colquitt, though, it was about not capitalizing on set pieces over the next eight minutes. Then Leon’s 50-50 win went to Sanchez for a pass to Pascual, who does great crosses, though the Viking keeper fell on this one. Moreno’s corner cross was caught at 12:45.
Lowndes was all over the Packer attackers, but the passing combinations finally got cashed in. Garcia started it to Ruben Gonzalez. It was then a back-and-forth with Moreno and a blast in the net for 1-0 at 11:44.
That score did not bring a barrage of more Packer shots, just one from Garcia high at 10:35. The Packer defense had to preserve the lead up to the half’s end, and big plays came from Wes Smith and Penuel Rodriguez. Duncan got to a head attempt in the last 15 seconds.
In the second half, Moreno drew all kind of reaches charging downfield at 35:25. The 20-yard free kick hit the Viking wall, and P. Rodriguez almost connected on the ensuing corner. Then, Garcia’s header from Moreno and Pascual was saved at 32:30.
But when Lowndes drew a foul just inside the box on the left, this penalty kick went in off Duncan’s hands to tie it at 1-1.
Duncan came back with a big knock-away at 25:05.
• Colquitt County High’s girls soccer fell to Lowndes’ girls 2-0 Tuesday.
It was 1-0 at halftime. Goalkeeper Julia Warnock made two saves in the first 10 minutes of the second half, and Hannah Goodno blocked a shot at 19:05. Colquitt’s best chance was on Ragan Harden’s blast caught at 17:59, but then Lowndes took a PK to lead 2-0 at 17:33.
