DALTON, Ga. — The Dalton Police Department has determined that a single-vehicle crash Wednesday morning along Coronet Drive that resulted in a fatality was a suicide.

The DPD said the crash was at approximately 7 a.m. near the entrance to Shaw Plant 81. A car headed east on Coronet Drive left the road at a high rate of speed and crashed into a utility pole, causing a fire that “consumed” the vehicle, the DPD said. Dalton Fire Department firefighters put out the fire.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, the DPD said, noting a witness said the driver “made no attempt to slow down or to stay on the road and instead steered directly towards the utility pole.”
