Covenant First Presbyterian hosting ‘A Service of Darkness’
LIVE OAK, Fla. — Covenant First Presbyterian Church invites the community to “A Service of Darkness” on Good Friday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m. The service entitled, “Hear Us, Holy Jesus,” is by Douglas E. Wagner. Bill Poplin will be directing the 24-voice choir. There will be scripture readings, congregational responses, and choral meditations. After each meditation the sanctuary will be darkened a little.
The Tenebrae Service dates from the 6th century. It is a dramatic service to remember the death and passion of Jesus Christ. The literal translation of the Latin word, “tenebrae” is “shadows;” thus the service moves from light to darkness. In the early church it was celebrated on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Holy Week. The purpose of the Tenebrae Service is to help us focus on the total impact of the darkest day in the history of Christianity, the day that Jesus died on the cross. The service is in complete contrast to Easter. The mood is what the followers of Jesus felt on the Friday long ago: shock, despair, gloom, grief and sadness; however, at the close of the service, the Christ candle returns as a sign of hope. The Good Friday service is designed to encourage the congregation to consider how their lives should reflect the historical and spiritual event. This will be purely a service of reflection. There is no admission charge and no offering will be taken. For more information, call 386-365-4932.

DAR ceremony to honor veterans of Vietnam
MOULTRIE, Ga. — Members of the John Benning Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day with a brief ceremony at 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 29, at the Eternal Flame at the Colquitt County Courthouse Square. In 2012 the President and Congress of the United States declared March 29 “Vietnam Veterans Day” commemorating the date in 1973 when the last U.S. troops left Vietnam marking the end the 11-year conflict. DAR will commemorate the day by placing a wreath and flying the Vietnam War 50th Commemoration Flag. They also placed U.S. flags for each of the Vietnam veterans listed on the Colquitt County War Memorial. An excerpt from the 2012 Presidential Proclamation declaring March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day will be read. The 2008 National Defense Authorization Act empowered the Secretary of Defense to conduct a program on behalf of the nation that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. To that end, “The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration” was formed. The Commemoration extends from Memorial Day 2012 through Veterans Day 2025.

Dice run planned to raise money for nine-year-old cancer patient
TIFTON, Ga. — A dice motorcycle run is being planned for March 31 to raise money for a nine-year-old recently diagnosed with brain cancer. Mikah Phillips was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer in February and has been receiving treatments since then, according to his sister Kelsey Barton. Barton said that getting her little brother treated has taken a huge financial toll on the family. They have to travel to Jacksonville every week for treatment, and his insurance company just informed the family they wouldn’t cover any more of his medical expenses, according to Barton. Brian Collins and Lonnie Lewis, two of the organizers for the event, said that when they heard about the family’s troubles, they wanted to do something to help, and came up with the dice run as a fundraiser. The event is being cosponsored by the Tifton Elks Lodge and the Crazy Loon Saloon, which is where Barton works. The dice run will begin at Tifton Harley Davidson, with registration starting at 11 a.m. From there participants will ride to Sycamore, Fitzgerald, Douglas and then back to Tifton, where they will end at the Crazy Loon Saloon. For more information or to donate contact Lewis at (229) 392-0358 or Collins at (229) 520-2355.
