MOULTRIE, Ga. — Members of the John Benning Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day with a brief ceremony at 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 29, at the Eternal Flame at the Courthouse Square.
In 2012 the President and Congress of the United States declared March 29 “Vietnam Veterans Day” commemorating the date in 1973 when the last U.S. troops left Vietnam marking the end the 11-year conflict.
DAR will commemorate the day by placing a wreath and flying the Vietnam War 50th Commemoration Flag. They also placed U. S. flags for each of the Vietnam veterans listed on the Colquitt County War Memorial. An excerpt from the 2012 Presidential Proclamation declaring March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day will be read.
The 2008 National Defense Authorization Act empowered the Secretary of Defense to conduct a program on behalf of the nation that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. To that end, “The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration” was formed. The Commemoration extends from Memorial Day 2012 through Veterans Day 2025.
DAR is a commemorative partner of the Vietnam War 50th Commemoration. This event is one of several planned by John Benning DAR during the commemoration time period. For more information about the 50th commemoration, visit http://www.vietnamwar50th.com.
