Thieves load car with used auto batteries

MOULTRIE, Ga. — There are a lot of former police-model Crown Victorias out there with beefed-up shocks for law enforcement use.

Whether a Crown Vic loaded Tuesday morning with 100 auto batteries was one of those or not, it must have been noticeably hugging the ground with that kind of weight along with two riders.

Wal-Mart, 641 Veterans Parkway S., reported the theft of the used batteries on Wednesday to Moultrie police. An employee told police that a camera showed the theft took place between 2:28 a.m. and 2:48 a.m. and was carried out by two people.

Video showed that the suspects cut the lock on the battery cage at the rear of the store and loaded them into the sedan, police said.

Car batteries weigh an average of about 39 pounds, according to the Reference.com website and about half of that weight is the lead core.
