MOULTRIE — Down 2-0 at the half, the Colquitt County boys soccer team scored three times after the break and took a 3-2 Region 1-7A victory over Lowndes on Tuesday in Valdosta.
The Lady Packers dropped the evening’s first game 1-0.
The Packers victory was their sixth in a row since losing back-to-back games to Camden County and Thomas County Central on Feb. 16 and Feb. 20.
They are now 11-2 overall and 3-1 in the region, with the rare win at Lowndes keeping their region championship hopes alive.
Lowndes took the 2-0 lead with goals in the 32nd and 39th minutes while the Packers missed a pair of close-in opportunities in the first eight minutes.
Colquitt County coach Jimbo Jarvis said he challenged his team during halftime and it responded.
Ruben Gonzalez finally got the Packers on the scoreboard with a goal five minutes into the second half. Raymon Garcia assisted.
Two minutes later, Garcia tied the game with Gonzalez assisting.
Jose Moreno got what proved to be the winning goal in the 61st minute with Garcia earning his second assist of the night.
The Packers were unable to convert another opportunity, but held on for the win.
Jarvis said he team was shorthanded on defense, but George Barber especially played well.
“It’s nice to go to be able to go to Lowndes and put a “W”
up,” said Jarvis, who got his 225th career coaching victory in the game.
“We’ll take it, but it’s by no means over for us. We can’t afford another loss.”
A goal in the first three minutes of the match gave Lowndes a 1-0 victory over Colquitt County in the girls game.
The loss drops the Lady Packers to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in Region 1-7A.
“We gave up a stupid mistake in the first three minutes of the game,” coach Trey Jones said. “Then we couldn’t find that final pass or cross to get one through.”
Jones said his back line played well, limiting the number of Lowndes shots.
Keeper Julia Warnock came up with 12 saves.
The Colquitt girls played with two starting forward injured, although Chloe Gould was able to take the field.
Jones also was pleased with the play of junior Joy Del Angel and freshman Reagan Young.
Colquitt is scheduled to play host to Brookwood School on Friday and to go to Lee County on Tuesday.
