MOULTRIE, Ga. — After a rash of thefts of property out of unlocked cars, Moultrie police are asking the public to make it a habit to lock doors in vehicles.
In recent days cash and $300 worth of smokeless tobacco have been among the items stolen, with most of the thefts occurring in Southeast Moultrie.
“A lot of people are leaving their doors unlocked,” Moultrie Police Department Lt. Freddie Williams said.
Pretty much all of the incidents have been thefts of opportunity where a passerby checking a car door takes advantage of those that are unlocked, police said. Having valuables on the seat also is a magnet for would-be thieves.
“Preferably (take) them out of the car,” Williams said.
