CHATSWORTH, Ga. — The Murray County Board of Education “relieved” superintendent Eric McFee “of his duties” Thursday night, district spokesman Mike Tuck said.

Tuck declined to answer other questions, including whether McFee is still being paid. McFee was paid $114,583 — including an additional $8,718 in travel — in 2017, according to open.georgia.gov.

Board member Frank Loyd also declined to answer questions. McFee could be reached immediately Friday night.

Loyd and Tuck said in the vote Thursday night to fire McFee, board member Aaron Phillips abstained and all other board members voted to fire McFee.

“This is a personnel matter, and anything we say in executive session has to stay there,” Loyd said.

McFee started as superintendent of Murray County Schools on Aug. 1, 2016, replacing Vickie Reed who left earlier that year to become superintendent of Brooks County Schools after 10 years at the helm in Murray County.

McFee had been principal of Gilmer High School for a year and a half in Ellijay. Before that he spent 27 years in the Lee County, Fla., school system.

“I was a principal, assistant principal, athletic director and teacher,” he said during an interview with the Daily Citizen-News in August 2016. “I taught physical education, Spanish and dropout prevention and coached basketball and swimming and anything else they needed me to do.”

McFee is a member of several local organizations and boards, including being on the Northwest Georgia Healthcare Partnership and O.N. Jonas Foundation boards.
