MOULTRIE, Ga. — The day when clocks spring forward for Daylight Saving Time is also the time recommended for checking smoke detectors.

Night owls or those working the night shift can move watches and clocks ahead at the 2 a.m. Sunday official beginning of the time change. For people with more traditional sleep schedules timepieces can be moved an hour ahead before going to sleep Saturday night.

The time changes in the spring and fall also are the times when firefighters remind people to spend a few minutes with their smoke detectors to make sure they will be alerted if there is a fire while residents are sleeping.

“When time changes, they need to change the batteries and make sure they work,” said Moultrie Fire Department Lt. Robin Lawson, who is in charge of fire prevention.

Residents also should test units to make sure they are in good operating order. That applies to those with replaceable batteries and the newer type that has a permanent battery and is meant to last for several years.

Lawson reminded those living in apartments to be safe when warm weather takes them outside to fire up the grill.

Grills should not be used close to the residence or indoors, he said. Outdoor chefs also should keep pets and children away from grills and should not leave them unattended.

Grills also should be cleaned regularly.

Using grills on attached balconies in apartments is prohibited.

“It’s unlawful to use grills on balconies,” Lawson said.

Moultrie residents who do not have smoke detectors can request one at no cost.

“They can schedule to have them installed free,” Lawson said.

To request a smoke detector, call the fire department at (229) 985-1805.
